I think Rothko will forever be my favorite painter.
I’d never experienced the kind of sweeping passion, or all-encompassing emotion from looking at a work of art until I saw one of his shows. The paintings consume you, and everything pours out of you because you’re witnessing such truth. The emotion is raw and the technique is impure.
Most people see his works as just these rectangular forms sprawled incoherently across a canvas. I thought that too, at first, but there’s something that changes inside you when you’re standing in front of one. It’s completely indescribable. It’s thrilling to feel all that just by looking at something.
